King Charles Spaniel - Charlies |
 |
|
|
|
|
|
It is with great
pleasure that we introduce a new breed in our Magazine. King
Charles Spaniel, also
called Charlies. Close related to our Cavaliers we share a lot
of history. By having Charlies in our
magazine, we hope for even more to share than just history.

It is very pleasing that there have been so
many
positive comments about Charlies being included in CKCS.SE. Both
Charlie and Cavalier people have been
in touch and expressed their appreciation. It seems
like it is a larger than normal interest in King Charles
Spaniels here in Sweden at the moment. That is wonderful as this
small breed could do with
some new enthusiasts.
The show season has merely started so there is not
a lot to report from that area. The only shows so
far, have been the double show, My Dog, in Gothenburg. The first
day Charlies where being judged by Carlos Saevich. He had an
entry of three dogs (which is fairly normal for this country).
He found his Best of Breed winner in the ruby bitch CH Bedecan
Happy Honey
(CH Hamingjor Handy – CH Frosta Jane Eyre).
Best dog went to the junior Charlie Bay King
Bhumibol (CH Onyx – CH Charlie Bay Lady-Aurora),
who won his first CC. The second day Andrew Brace judged our
breed. He once wrote breed history
here in Sweden, when he placed CH Maibee Alberto
first in the toy group at the international show in Stockholm in
1990. Alberto then ended up on the
fifth place in the Best in Show. This was a moment
no Charlie enthusiast will ever forget. In
Gothenburg however, Andrew brace did not find
any of the three entered Charlies to be
quite to his liking, so there was no BOB
awarded that day.
In our neighbouring country Norway the list of
the top winners of last year has been published.
Top winner is the Swedish bred CH Bright Kings
Siona (CH Cacipi's Espen - Gullvivans Sarayah),
and on the second place is the English import
CH Amantra Chopin (Amantra Chauffeur -
Amantra Cha-Cha-Cha). Third place went
to last year’s winner CH Rybergets Royal
Reflection (CH Tewhit Trustee – CH Amantra Evangeline), who has
now come of age to compete
in the veteran’s class. The list of top winners in
Norway only includes dogs owned by members of
the Norwegian Toy Dog Club (Norsk Miniatyrhund Klubb). A number
of dogs whose owners are not members have been successful in the
show rings
during 2005.
|

Some of
these are CH Gorgeous Kings Lucie Marielle (CH Royal Ruby De La
Bacska – CH Bright Kings Siona), CH Ask From The House Of Tangee
(CH Cacipi's Espen – CH Tewhit Tangee) and CH Makenna Florentyna
(CH Rybergets Royal Reflection – CH Frosta Pina Colada).
The Charlie people in Norway are working on a set of
recommendations for the breeding of King Charles Spaniels. They
have not had anything like that before, but now the time has
come to do something about it.
In these guidelines there are recommendations about both heart
and eye examinations. This is positive, as
it should be in everybody’s interest to keep our Charlies as
healthy as possible. More about this, as well as the complete
list of the top winners of 2005, can be found on the website for
King Charles Spaniels in Norway:
http://home.no/kingcharles/enindex.htm.
There is no list of Swedish top winners 2005. Such a
list used to be put together by our breed club, but as many of
you know our breed club is dormant. However,
if there had been a list, a qualified guess is that
CH Bedecan Happy Jokerman (Marsward Mighty Macabeus – CH Bedecan
Happy Honey) would have
been in a top position. 2005 was a very successful
year for this young black and tan.
Any one who has any interesting Charlie news to share, is more
than welcome to contact me.

It was with great pleasure that
I accepted to
write about King Charles Spaniels, also called Charlies.
Charlies are a wonderful, small breed,
that many more should be able to enjoy and discover.
Unfortunately it could be difficult to find information but
hopefully this magazine could help
in spreading more knowledge about this breed.
Now, when the year is ended, let’s have a retrospect of the
year 2005.

REGISTRATION OF NEW CHARLIES
Total number of new registration for King Charles Spaniels is a
modest amount of 20 Charlies a year. Unfortunately 2005 was no
exception – it ended at 19 newborn puppies. There were no
imported Charlies to Sweden, although to Norway and
Finland quite a lot of new imports arrived.
The “talk” says that for next year there will be
some new imports to Sweden, so hopefully this
will be an opportunity for the breed to increase
in numbers which is necessary.
Among the newborn puppies all four colours were present,
although Blenheim were the most common colour. Just looking back
some years when tricolour were the only colour and the other
colours were rare and uncommon, so it has changed quickly.
HEART EXAMINATIONS & MURMUR
The year that went by contain both joyful and
sad events for us who loves the breed. To the
joyful part you may count in the Heart
Examinations that was done in the beginning
of the year.
It was Professor Clarence Kvart and his student Anders Odhelius
that examine all present Charlies
at the Club Show in Borås 2003. After this Anders Odhelius has
continued to examine heart both in Sweden and Norway. After that
he wrote his examination work at the Veterinary Education School
about murmur for King Charles Spaniels.
The conclusion was bases upon more than 100 Charlies, which is a
very high number in a breed
with numerical small numbers.
Unfortunately the result shown high number of Murmur. 30% of
them had a murmur of varying degree. Charlies older than 4 years
almost 60%
had murmur. The study shows also that dogs
more common had murmur, which also
appeared in an early age.
If you are interested in the whole essay you may find it at:
http://www.king-charles.tk/
We who live and love the breed, there were no surprise that
hereditary murmur is a serious
problem, and for sure shouldn’t be anything that gives pleasure.
Although a pleasure is that we now got scientific proofs which
allow us something concrete to move further from. Also
tremendous many owners & breeders travelled a long way in order
to help Anders Odhelius in making his work meaningful and
statistical correct.

OUR BREED CLUB
Less joyful event last year was that we don’t
have a Breed Club anymore. On an extra board meeting combined
with the show in Västerås the King Charles Alliance was declared
dormant. This was caused of a long conflict period that
culminated when no board members could be elected. Even for us
who participated in this meeting it’s unclear what went wrong?
Anyway,
it’s sad that we don’t any longer have the breed club, though we
were a small nice breed club
with comfortable shows and a small
informative magazine.

Hopefully the Breed Club will be re-started soon, according to
regulations we have 5 years to wake the club to live again.
Unfortunately the backsides of not having a Breed Club are many.
We don’t have a magazine any longer, we are not allowed to have
Club Shows,
and we are not allowed to show our dogs at SDHK’s shows though
we don’t have a Breed Club.
At the same time this is very strange though SDHK is the one,
who is responsible for the breed
Charlies, but SDHK’s regulations don’t allow individuals to be
members, you have to be a
member of a Breed Club first. Without having a Breed Club this
put us in a strange situation and arouse undeniably a lot of
questions, but I am sure of that this will be cleared during
2006.
Another issue is how SDHK will be able to fulfil
their responsibility for King Charles Spaniels
without having the breeders as members; also
this will hopefully be very clear during 2006.

King Charles Spaniels Club –
United Kingdom
Some weeks before our Swedish Club Show had I the pleasure of
visit the English Club Show, organized by the King Charles
Spaniels Club. In UK there is 3
different Breed Clubs for Charlies and the King Charles Spaniels
Club is the biggest and oldest. The club was celebrating their
120 year anniversary this year. The judge was Julia Pennington (Tudorhurst)
and she had incredible 136 Charlies entered. According to my
knowledge this must be record, even with English standards and
especially for me who more are used to think that 8 Charlies are
big entering numbers.

BIS & CC - Tewhit Typhoon

BIS-Puppy Check Mate
Amantra
BIS+CC Tewhit Typhoon
R-BIS+CC Ch. Tewhit Tandango
R-CC
Ch. Amantra Character

Tewhit Typhoon had a successful weekend though the day before he
became BOB and CC at the Birmingham National with 83 Charlies
entered. That day Brenda Essex (Brendek) was the judge.
Öland September-2005
In Sweden Gun-Britt Johanssons ruby bitch, Ch Bedecan Happy
Honey had great success. She became BOB and Group-4 at the
Kennel Club Show in Öland. It’s rather rare that Charlies are
placed in the Group finals so it is more than welcome and should
be acknowledged. Congratulations Honey! The judge in both the
breed and the group was Karl-Erik Johansson.
Hamar, Norway November-2005
At the Norwegian Winner show in Hamar 14 Charlies was entered
for judge Knut Sigurd Willberg.
BOB Ch. Rydbergets Royal Reflection

Show was judged by Karl-Erik Johansson.
Day I

BOS Ribessita Hey Jude Of Liverpool
Day II

Hopefully 2006 will be a great Charlie year. Even if we
momentarily don’t have a Breed Club in Sweden, clearly there is
a high interest for the breed, which is really good. King
Charles Spaniels is a delightful piece of art and really
deserves to be recognized.
Happy New Year!
