Dear Readers,
Welcome to read my second report.
As the winter has really taken its hold of Finland, the
temperature has dropped below -20 degrees Celsius
even in the southern Finland. I have to say that I do
not like it to be that cold outside - and my dogs do not care
for it either! A friend of mine took care of my cavalier-girl
Pammy while I attended a wedding the
other weekend and took her along with her Swedish Vallhunds for
a nice long walk in the national park of Nuuksio. My friend
later commented that eventhough
my cavalier wore a winter jacket she didn't quite have
the humour for the outing in the -23 degrees Celsius weather as
Pammy had refused to go out later in the evening - maybe in the
fear of another 2 hour walk! ;)
The weather has now been slightly milder for a few
days, but the snow remains. Luckily this is something
both my dogs love.
The Finnish Cavalier club has now announced the
winners for their annual Cavalier of the Year competition. The
winner of the main competition was the dog with
52 points against the 46 points of the bitch. Please
find all the winners below.

I have finally
managed to ‘steal’ a few moments from
the Christmas & New Year’s hassle to write my very
first report from the Finnish cavalier front. I am really
looking forward to bringing a few greetings from the active
scene here in Finland, hopefully as often
as a couple of times a month.
I have a great topic for my first report as last
weekend (17.-18.12.2005) we had the pleasure
(and not to mention the stress) to hold two extremely large
exhibitions within one weekend – some of
you might know about the Nordic Winner show that
was held on Sunday the 18th of December – but in addition to
this we also had the top event of our
show-dog year, the Finnish Winner, on the
very same Saturday.
The Cavalier judges for the events were definitely interesting
for both the viewers and the exhibitors,
but surprisingly the exhibition pulled only 25 dogs
and 31 bithes on Saturday and 24 dogs and
24 bitches on Sunday. I would like to speculate
the cost of the exhibition entry to have some weight
in this matter as well as the choice of judges.
The results for the Saturday’s Finninsh Winner 2005
were as follows:
Judge; Ann Horan, Great Britain

A load of dogs not seen in these results were
awarded with ‘Very Good’ and ‘Good’ – amongst these dogs/bitches
that were unplaced were also ones that
are champions or have been awarded with a
CC/RCC in the past.
As surprising as the results might have been, they
were also somewhat expected - if we look back at
the last time we had Ann Horan to judge here in Finland, only
one dog was awarded with an ‘Excellent’ out of 31.
I have always thought it is good to find a judge who
is not afraid to use the entire scale in his/her judging. There
are no rules for the minimum amount of
‘Excellent’ to be awarded for each sex. I feel that if
the judge is invited for the show and a dog brought in front of
the judge for a critique, the results should be appreciated as a
specialist’s opinion. Of course I would like to think the
quality of Cavaliers in Finland to be slightly better than what
the results from Saturday
might imply – but that’s just an afterthought! ;)
Already on Saturday it was announced that Herbert
Heim would not be able to judge and would be replaced by Joyce
O’Connor. This judge also took a look at the King Charles
Spaniels on Saturday, so we got a little ‘taste’ of what she
might be doing the following
day with Cavaliers.

On Sunday, the results ended up as
follows:
Judge: Joyce O'Connor,
Ireland
(replacing the original judge Herbert Heim, Germany)

BREEDERS
1. Babbler's, HP
We can decide that the weekend was a really good
one for the breeder/owner of any dog that was
awarded with an ‘Excellent’ on Saturday and of course
it must have been great if the ‘Excellent’
was repeated on the next day.
The Finnish Winner show held on Saturday was
actually the largest one-day international event
ever held in the world of dog shows. We have to be extremely
proud of having managed to host an event
of that size as efficiently as it was (and that is most probably
as efficiently as it must have been possible!).
The amount of entries on Saturday was 7800 dogs
(and on Sunday 7600) - these dogs came from 23 different
countries and represented 305 different breeds. The events were
huge and it was great to be present and part of them – but in
the end, both days were extremely long for the people and their
dogs.
Personally I would have to say I prefer the events to be held
over two days.
I was manning together with the great help of my
mother Anita Savolainen the information booth of the Finnish
Cavalier Club – which we have been doing now for the last 4
years on a row. It was a great pleasure
to talk with old & new friends of the breed once again!
It was also a positive observation to notice that people were
more informed and conversing more freely about the health
matters. As usual, our info-booth was the most photographed
booth amongst them all – and who could not admire 2-3 lovely
cavaliers slouching away
on their ‘royal throne’. Warm regards to all the people who we
met during the weekend!
My next report should reach you in January – I’m
looking forward to receiving any comments &
suggestions of what you would like me to write
about or which event you would Iike me to cover.
I would like to wish you all a happy &
successful year 2006!
Sara
