Breeder Portrait - Nocturnes Cavaliers, Sweden

We proudly present our second "Breeder Portrait" This time we went to Nocturnes Cavaliers on
the east side of Sweden, Norrtälje. We hade our pencil and notebook ready - with
meny hard
and different questions. So we put the breeder Ulf & Pia Klöverbäcka gainst the wall.

From German Shepard to Cavalier

Both Uffe and I grow up with dogs. Already in the 50's not knowing each other
we had each a German shepherd bitch in the family, but for Uffe breeding
dogs started in the 70's.

The kennel name Nocturnes did we receive on utilitarian qualification, under
the 70's and the 80's you had to qualify to get a kennel name. 1978 I bought
Nocturnes Dina, a 7 month old G-shepherd bitch from Ulf Klöverbäck and even
then was Ulf talking about the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed that Höjdens
kennel was breeding at the same time as the German shepherds dog. I had it
hard accepting a small dog, I loved competing in utilitarian!!

Exhibition, no I couldn’t come to terms with it, imagine what things can changes.
Already 1979 did the first cavalier bitch arrive in our new started family. Her
name was Höjdens Quicky and two years later was her first puppies born
Nocturnes A-litter. Sire to them where an English import by the name of
Lochbuie the Saint, he was tricoloured and in that first born it was 3 bitches
and 2 dogs. One of the bitches, Nocturnes Angelique became our prefix. What
ever we looking for it’s always here face we search after. Angelique succeeds
to get one CC and that by the age of 6. On the other hand, her half brother
Biggles became Nocturnes first Champion and even an International Champion
and with him my interest in exhibition started. Quicky became mother to
3 champions. Nocturnes Biggles, Columbus and Funny Boy.

This spurred us to get an English dog that would fit our bitches. Eva
Gustavsson, Spotlines kennel presented me to Norma och Gordon Inglis, and
1987 in November was Such Craigowl Woodchip e GBch Craigowl Hoodwink
u GBch Craigowl Cashmere born. A winter day 1988 came the first
Craigowl dog to Sweden.

He became later on sired to 3 more Nocturnes champions. Behind Craigowl
dogs there was a whole lot of Homerbrent and it fitted well with our own lines
and type of Cavaliers. One of UK top winning dogs was Springtide at Alensmere
and 1991 did we bought our second Craigowl dog that was sired after him, as
Such Craigowl Gordon. When I was in UK and got Gordon I fell in love with
a lovely ruby dog, we had not thought starting breeding whole colour dogs,
but when Norma asked me if I couldn’t take him along to Sweden, I just
couldn’t say no. Craigowl Cadbury (Brandy) as he was called, didn’t succeed
to get that last CC for championship, but the was a lovely breeders dog and
became sired to Finuch Nocturnes Kiss me Kate and
Nocturnes Kontrabas, which is still alive.

1990 was 3 bitches having litters after Craigowl, one of them staid in UK and
her name was Craigowl Silkience, both of her sisters became imported to
Sweden Craigowl Chantilly and Craigowl Sunsilk and became champions.
The same year was Such Telvara Royal Consort imported. And after that it
just went on. Under those years I was in UK plenty of times and get to know
lots of UK breeders, one of them was Pascavale and in the early 90th came Pascavale Warren. He was brother to GBch Pascavale Louis. Just a few years
later did Such Pascavale Freddie Mercury arrive, that now days are the tribe
for our whole colour dogs. Those things I remember like yesterday is consists
with dogs, but without the past it can’t be no future.

This year 26 years later have we done 26 dogs to champions, most of
them with the name Nocturnes, but our imports has meant that we have
been able to use the lines we started with. Many Nocturnes dog goes back
to Quicky and our latest champion Nocturnes Mors Lilla Olle is the 6th in a
line from her. I could write a whole lot more pages of our Nocturnes dogs,
but do I get the question what moment that meant the most in our breeding
it would be when Norduch Intuch Nocturnes Yes Sir I Can Bogie became
Sweden’s top winner 1998 of all cavaliers and was chosen out to
be best champion of champions 1999.

Next biggest was this year, when we revised Cavaliersällskapets
breeder price and when mine and Birgitta Östergrens Book of Cavalier
King Charles Spaniel was presented in the bookshops

We put the breeders against the wall - Question time!

What’s the most
importent in  your
breeding program?
A sound body in a sound soul! An anatomic correct dog, there the mentality is in the front line.

What do you look for
when you buy a puppy?
It depends on what the age of the puppy is at the moment. First I look at testicles are in place on a male and that the bite is correct. The age of the puppy relives the anatomy in the puppy.

Who in your mine has
meant the most for;
A: Sweden?
B: your own breeding?
A: Kindrum Gillespie
B:
Our first bitch: Höjdens Quicky, a wonderful bitch.

Put name on the best

The worst? Freddie Mercury past away.

do you prefer?
UK special judges.

like to change?

to new breeders??
Try to get a mentor a good experienced breeder of the dog breed.
